Y2K17 FOREIGN ARTIST RULES of PERFORMANCE/DETAILS ABOUT THE FESTIVAL to read thoroughly, sign and return TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR BOOKING
Y2K17 International Live Looping Festival
October 17th-24nd, 2017, Santa Cruz, California
Y2K17 RULES of PERFORMANCE AGREEMENT
(please read this thoroughly, sign it and return it in the form of an email. It has all the information you need about the festival)
This festival is a LIVE LOOPING festival. This means that artists who perform must have a large amount of live looping in their musical set. We have had artists in the pasts who merely triggered pre-recorded samples or loops and played over them. This is NOT acceptable for this festival. If you use drum machines or sequencers, please, be prepared to program them in front of the audience.
We do not allow the use of pre-recorded parts in performance. If this is part of your normal performance style, then please consider coming to do an improvisational set that breaks from what you normally do. We really encourage creativity of all kinds and this can be a really nice way to ‘step outside of the box’ in your own performances.
However, there is no style or genre associated with the festival so anything
you want to do creatively is encouraged and supported. Be as creative
as you’d like to be. That’s the spirit of this beautiful festival.
Performances all occur on two adjacent stages. Up to 70 artists from up to 16 countries will perform continuously for a 24 hour period over three days. There are no breaks between acts so the music is
Because the stages adjoin in view of the audience members, set up and break down can be very distracting to the audience so it is imperative that loading Artists be as sensitive as possible not to draw focus from those who are performing.
1) Artists have 20 minute maximum completely silent load in (Line checks can be accomplished with supplied headphones, also silently and many artists will be on hand to help you load on and off silently when your time comes)
2) Artists have 30 minute maximum performance
3) Artists have 10 minutes maximum complete silent evacuation of the stage
1) Artists who take longer to load will have time cut off of their performances
2) Artist who perform to long or take too long to evacuate the stage at the
end of their sets result in the next act having time shaved off their set.
WE HAVE TO STAY ON SCHEDULE OR THE ARTISTS AT THE END OF THE EVENING WILL BE DENIED A SPOT. MANY OF THESE ARTISTS HAVE COME THOUSANDS OF MILES AT CONSIDERABLE EXPENSE SO PLEASE BE CONSCIOUS and HURRY OFF STAGE WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED PERFORMING. ASK FOR HELP FROM ANYONE TO HELP YOU EVACUATE THE STAGE ON TIME
BACK LINE EQUIPMENT:
Regrettably, we just don’t have the resources to provide ANY backline equipment for the festival with the exception of HEADLINING ACTS.
Please be prepared to come with everything you need to make a performance (equipment, line or mic chords) tables or chairs)……………….if this is completely untenable, please let me know but remember it just adds greatly to our work for the festival which is considerable and not paid!
There will be a P.A. there and most solo artists just provide us with a mono feed, a stereo feed or , perhaps two stereo feeds to the board (we have 8 channels for each stage). The venues are small, so micing of amplifiers is NOT necessary.
FOREIGN ARTIST COMPENSATION:
We run in the red every year (out of my pocket always) so there is, regrettably, no
compensation for the artists.
Over time, I am researching new ways to get granting and to get subsidies from music companies. These invariably will be offered, first, to the artists who travel from out of the country to come perform but almost always for just the official headlining artists. Realistically, however, the recession has just killed donations in the past year and this past year we did not have enough money to give out any funding at all.
I am always willing to write letters of invitation and/or recommendation for any artist who wants to seek government grants or private funding for their travels.
FOREIGN ARTIST ARRIVAL and DEPARTURE TIMES:
We highly recommend that you fly into San Jose International Airport (SJC) instead of San Francisco (SFO) because it cuts a full hour and a half off of our drive to pick you up
In order to accommodate the large number of artists traveling to the festival. We can provide free transportation to and from Santa Cruz and SJS or SFO if and only if you will arrive after noon (12:00) on Tuesday, October 17th, 2017 and depart after 14:00 on Tuesday, October 24th, 2017.
If you want to arrive or depart at other times (NOT before or after Tuesday 18-25) we can help you to arrange transportation to and from the airport right before the festival begins or ends. It costs about $80 USD for the one way Airporter from Santa Cruz to San Francisco and you will be responsible for that cost if you arrive or depart oustide of the dates and times listed above.
FOREIGN TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM THE VENUES DURING THE FESTIVAL:
We will provide all of your transportation to and from where you will stay and the
venues during your stay.
FOREIGN ARTIST ACCOMMODATION:
We will provide artists free places to stay in our homes and the homes of other live looping artists and our gracious neighbors as long as you don’t mind sleeping bag on blow up mattress accommodations with other loopers.
Unfortunately, we do not have the resources to house or transport accompanying techs. This festival is designed to be guerrilla/festival oriented and relatively low tech. Come light and swift and remember you’ll be one of 50+ artists performing.
We attempt to make everyone as comfortable as possible and almost everyone who has attended
the festival has said it was one of the best experiences in their lives even though the accommodations
were not in 5 start hotels <grin>
GUEST and COMP LISTS:
We charge at the door and don’t allow guests at all because the venue is just not large enough to accommodate more people.
This includes roadies or friends who help you load in. They need to be prepared to pay for their entrance or have you pay for them. We just can’t afford to do this festival without sticking religiously with this rule.
This is all fairly draconian but we have evolved this way to accommodate the largest number of artists without failing horribly, financially and energetically. We ask for your support in this.
ALL FUTURE CORRESPONDENCES:
Please write us as little as possible. All of the information you need for the festival is in this document so please read it thoroughly and refer to it before you ever write.
The only information you will need will be the final scheduling of performances which comes very late in the game (generally no sooner than one month before the festival). It will be on the website as soon as it is decided, I promise.
Coordinating 60+ artists every year takes hundreds of hours of work
that is not compensated for. Please be conscious and reduce my pre-festival work load so that I, too, can have a creative artistic life.
In all future correspondence:
Please USE ALL CAPITAL LETTERS and write your NAME and Y2K17 LOOPFEST in your subject line your email.
Subject: YOUR NAME (LOCATION) Y2K17 LOOPFEST
I get approximately 3,000 + emails a year for the festival so this will help me sort my
festival e-mail from my personal e-mail
PUBLICITY: Please write to AMY LEE
email@example.com, our webmaster and send her a hi resolution photograph of your self (300dpi in .jpeg format), a 150 word biography/description of your music and any relevant URLS (website, YouTube, MySpace, SoundCloud, BandCamp, et. al.) so that she can build your profile on the web page: www.y2kloopfest.com
I hope you understand all of this and know that we are thrilled that you want to come perform!
It’s an amazing festival. Erdem Helvacioglu, an incredible acoustic/electronic musician who has played huge festival all over Europe, the UK, the Americas and the Middle East has called it, “…the most creative music festival I’ve ever played”.
It’s also an incredibly supportive community. The headliners every year are at the festival at 12 noon when the newbies are nervously playing their very first sets just to be supportive.I think of the festival almost as a looping convention as much as a festival due to the creative interaction between all the musicians who are involved. We have technology premieres. The top gear designers are in attendance and the top loopers from around the world are there, generously sharing their knowledge with everyone regardless of experience level. It’s an amazing and uplifting event and everyone tends to go home very jazzed about looping and creativity afterwards.
Thank you so very much for showing interest in this wonderful festival. We’ll be blessed to have you come play. We can’t wait to meet you.
